Started work on the Linn-Mar commission this afternoon. It’s always strange sitting down with a blank piece of paper, trying to will a composition into being. Strange, but exciting, too. I would like to continue my exploration of rhythm along the lines of my pieces "6" "Crossfade" and "12." I had an idea for something in 9/8 that has an uneven pulse of 2+2+3+2. I think this kind of thing is exciting, but lots of players hate counting. String players aren’t as bad with counting as singers, but I’m still a little worried about going too far into difficult rhythms with high school players. I’ll keep developing it and see what happens.
